How does tutoring work?

Tutoring with me can be face to face within the Nelson, NZ region or online. All tutoring session are one on one, delivered by me (a dedicated, friendly and experienced teacher).
As I only take on a limited number of students at any time, we will always have a free consultation meeting to assess your child's needs, strengths and interests.
If your child becomes a student of mine, the lessons are exclusively planned to build on strengths, identify their needs and ensure clear next steps. Lessons can take place before, during or after school depending on my availability.

How does online tutoring work?

Students must have a computer and a high speed internet access. We will communicate using Zoom where we can see and hear each other. I use an interactive whiteboard tool that the students can write on and I can upload videos, images and worksheets for use before, during and after the class.
I find it best to wear a headset during our sessions to limit any external distractions and to allow clear communication.
As in all other sessions, these lessons are planned with your student exclusively in mind ensuring high quality learning experiences.

What subjects do you tutor?

I am a fully qualified primary and intermediate teacher, which means I can teach almost any subject. However, my sessions specialise in Maths, Reading, Writing and English Language.

I have specialist experience in the fields of dyslexia, science, technology and public speaking and drama.

When you book a tutoring session with me, I will work exclusively with your child so I am always open to any special requirements.

general faq

How is progress measured?

As a highly experienced primary teacher familiar with the English and NZ curricula I am able to make an initial assessment of your child's learning. I then develop a learning plan aligning with the national curriculum, which is shared with you and the student. Each session we will focus on a key area and regular feedback will be given. I use diagnostic assessment tools to measure progress and adapt my practice as necessary to ensure the sessions always accelerate learning in areas of need. Students will also have some reinforcing homework, in which you can see the progress in action at home.

How often should I have my child tutored?

The frequency of our sessions depends on the needs and attention span of the student. If your child requires significant support, I recommend two weekly one hour sessions. For students who are younger or who have a shorter attention span 30-45 minute lessons may be more appropriate. If your child is motivated and needs the help, I find three sessions per week particularly impactful for rapid acceleration.
I will only ever take on a limited number of students to ensure the highest quality of academic tutoring resulting in individualised educational experiences that couldn't possibly be matched in a typical classroom.

How do I book?

To book tutoring services with me, please complete the application form, describing your child's needs and what you hope to gain from the sessions.
